Students undertake two placements, usually for a total of 70 continuous days each
The student needs to attend the agency for a minimum of two days per week, 7 hours per day
Students need to be supervised by a person qualified under AASW guidelines i.e. having completed a BSW and have two years experience in the field.
In instances where a supervisor does not meet AASW qualification, then a co-supervisor needs to be appointed, either from within the agency, or appointed by the university.
Where students need to take leave from placement, (sick leave or other leave) days need to be made up to ensure completion of the required number of days.
Students need to take appropriate lunch breaks – it is not acceptable for students to work through the day without breaks.
Students may undertake evening or weekend work if this opportunity is offered by the agency. Equivalent reduction in daytime hours should be arranged in consultation with the Field Educator.
According to AASW guidelines, students should only undertake one placement in an organisation where they are in paid employment, when the following conditions are met:
A clearly defined placement has been developed – not a job transfer
The placement is in a different physical section of the agency from the student’s work location
The student has a different supervisor and work tea
Supervision should be provided in a formal way for one hour per week
