Guidelines

  • Students undertake two placements, usually for a total of 70 continuous days each
  • The student needs to attend the agency for a minimum of two days per week, 7 hours per day
  • Students need to be supervised by a person qualified under AASW guidelines i.e. having completed a BSW and have two years experience in the field.
  • In instances where a supervisor does not meet AASW qualification, then a co-supervisor needs to be appointed, either from within the agency, or appointed by the university.
  • Where students need to take leave from placement, (sick leave or other leave) days need to be made up to ensure completion of the required number of days.
  • Students need to take appropriate lunch breaks – it is not acceptable for students to work through the day without breaks.
  • Students may undertake evening or weekend work if this opportunity is offered by the agency. Equivalent reduction in daytime hours should be arranged in consultation with the Field Educator.
  • According to AASW guidelines, students should only undertake one placement in an organisation where they are in paid employment, when the following conditions are met:
    • A clearly defined placement has been developed – not a job transfer
    • The placement is in a different physical section of the agency from the student’s work location
    • The student has a different supervisor and work tea
  • Supervision should be provided in a formal way for one hour per week
